What is the UN Global Citizen Initiative?
“You see the war, but you can’t stop it.”
“You feel hunger, but you can’t eradicate it.”
“You know the sufferings, yet you can’t heal it.”
The world is suffering, and so are we! All we see around ourselves are endless miseries.
At some point in our lives, all we wanted was a chance to change the world. We might not have had a chance then, but we have hope today. And the hope is the United Nations global citizen Initiative.
UN is an organization formed after World War II, including 193 countries as its members, responsible for promoting global harmony and peace.
Global citizen is an initiative started by the UN to ensure each of us plays our due part in making the world a beautiful place to live.
The UN Global Citizen Initiative
Here are some of the common questions answered about the UN global citizen Initiative.
1. How can we do this?
Well, here is everything you need to know about being a global citizen and the UN global citizen initiative.
1.1. Who is a Global Citizen? Why Should You be one?
“Global citizen is someone who can look above his race, religion, nationality, status, language, and contribute to making our planet beautiful.”
War, poverty, hunger, discrimination, inequality, violation of human rights, scarcity of water, and global warming are the true face of the globe we live in.
The question is WHY? Why is the world suffering? Why do even the most innocent souls bear the most horrific circumstances?
Remember the picture of Aylan Kurdi and the toddler washed up on a Turkish beach whose family was trying to escape the Syrian war? It was the picture that shook the world and deeply pained every human.
Now is the time when we all take a stand against all these atrocities. Don’t be a bystander; we are not a generation of bystanders, be a global citizen so that no other child suffers the same fate as Aylan.
1.2. United Nations Global Goals, 2030.
The 2030 agenda for sustainable development is as follows:
- To end poverty and hunger
- To give all girls and boys access to quality education
- To ensure human rights for all and gender equality and empowerment of all women and girls
- To ensure peace and a world free of war; combat climate change.
Overall, there are 17 goals and 169 targets to be achieved by the year 2030.
1.3. How can we Contribute?
We can be the first generation to end extreme poverty, the most determined to end injustice and inequality, and the last generation to be threatened by climate change” – Global citizen
You’ll be surprised to know how simple it is to contribute; all you have to do is-
- Sign online petition
- Email world leaders
- Tweet the campaign
- Tell everyone about it
1.4. Impact
By being aware of all global issues, we can ensure that the governments, businesses, and world leaders do not get away from their responsibilities. The UN global citizen Initiative helps here.
1.5. You’ll Be Rewarded
What goes around comes around. Apart from the satisfaction of doing something for society, you will earn points for every contribution you make and be given a chance to redeem them for concert tickets and other offers.
